Born of the unlikely pairing of an Astral Deva and an Eirnye (undercover work for both at the Blessed Bed Brothel and Bunk House), Kaer was abandoned as soon as he was born. Before he could die of exposure, Kaer was picked up by the famous Actor and Producer Bordani Thule. Bordani was a talented actor whose long and illustrious career was ended by a jealous carpenter husband and an opportunistic understudy. Left almost unable to walk and with a terrible rasp of a voice, Bordani turned his considerable talents to producing where his success rivalled even his prodigious acting career.
Although never a humble man, after the unfortunate incident at the theatre that took his mobility and voice Bordani discovered his mortality and began looking for someone to be his protégé. Not trusting the actors guild after the incident, he took to the streets looking for ‘the next big thing’. It was during one of these searches that Bordani heard the wailing of a child and went to investigate. In a garbage strewn alley, Bordani swatted 3 rats from the body of the squalling baby and upon looking at him, knew that he had found his protégé.
Bordani spent the next 15 years training and educating young Kaer in acting and the theatre. Kaer worked long and hard to acquire the skills and knowledge that Bordani was offering and to prepare for his ‘Grande Debut!’. Alas, it wasn’t to be. On the way to the theatre that very night, Bordani was taken by the “Things in the Night” and was never heard from again. When word reached the Theatre Bertolli Nostrami, the play was cancelled and young Kaer was left without his beloved Master. No trace beyond a wrecked carriage, his walking staff were found and his famous reversible cloak, though great effort was put into the search and investigation. Many are the rumours and speculation about what occurred that night, from jealous husbands (Bordani never really learned from the incident), to kidnapping, to outright murder and “the Things”. Some even suggested that he term was up and whomever he sold his soul to had come for payment. Whatever the case, Kaer soon discovered what excellent actors his Master’s ‘friends’ were and before too long, Kaer was back in the alley where he was discovered with nothing but his Master’s staff, cloak and hunger.
Bitter but not jaded, Kaer began to look into the disappearance himself. His search turned up nothing more than the other investigators except for one thing. On a white collar of the collar of Bordani’s famous cloak was the imprint of ruby red lips. Although everyone thought it was the mark of an unknown lover, it seemed to Kaer to be something more. The impression was too perfect in detail to be the rushed kiss of a lover. it looked planted and deliberate to him. Unfortunately, Kaer was never able to discover more about the mark beyond its name, ‘The Devil’s Mark’
shortly thereafter, Kaer witnessed an attack by several shadowy ‘Things’ on a man who suddenly burst into a heavenly radiance so powerful and beautiful that the shadows burst into golden flames and disappeared. Drawn to the holy light, Kaer approached the man and asked if he could help. The man, Sir Kalian Lowe, a powerful paladin, recognized the goodness in Kaer and saw the unusual heritage of the Tiefling and accepted his offer of help. Sir Lowe allowed Kaer to ‘escort’ him to his Chapter House, and while walking subtly drew Kaer’s story out of him. When they arrived, Sir Lowe offered Kaer a room to spend the night in as it was well past the curfew and the night was alive. He had told Sir Lowe of his quest to find his Master and to take back the night from the things that prowled it. Sir Lowe told him that he could teach him how to fight the Night and maybe find out what happened to his Master. Kaer accepted and 7 years later, emerged from the Chapter House a Warrior of the Holy Light in Arodan’s service.
Despite his lengthy training, Kare never forgot his quest or his single clue. One day, after returning to the House, he discovered in the pocket of his cloak, an invitation to the Gold Goblin to participate in the tournament there and though there was no signature, on the invitation was the imprint of ruby red lips, a Devil’s Mark identical to that on his Master’s old cloak.
Someone there knows something about what happened that fateful night, and Kaer is going to find out who and what.
